All about Curls
Why is my hair Curly?
Hair naturally becomes curly due to the unique structure of the hair follicles. Each hair follicle contains a hair shaft, which is made up of a protein called keratin. The shape and texture of the hair are determined by the shape of the hair follicle itself. Curly hair follicles are often oval or asymmetrical, while straight hair follicles are typically round. This structural difference affects how the hair shaft emerges from the scalp and grows, causing it to curl as it lengthens. Additionally, the presence of certain proteins and chemicals in the hair, as well as genetic factors, can influence the degree of curliness. Therefore, the combination of genetics and follicle structure plays a significant role in determining whether a person has naturally curly hair.
Curls & Dryness
The unique structure of curly hair, with its twists and bends, can have a significant impact on moisture retention. Unlike straight hair, which allows oils from the scalp to travel down the hair shaft easily, curly hair's irregular shape can impede the distribution of natural oils. This often leads to dryness and frizz in curly hair, as the oils struggle to coat and hydrate the entire length of the hair. Curly hair is also more porous due to its shape, making it more susceptible to moisture loss and external factors like humidity, which can cause it to absorb excess moisture and swell, resulting in frizz. Therefore, managing and maintaining proper moisture levels in curly hair often requires specific care routines and products designed to hydrate and protect these unique textures effectively.
Home Care
Curly hair does require more love and attention. There are many curl specific products on the market today and the knowledge surrounding curly hair and all techniques can be overwhelming! So lets keep it simple to start. Here are a few things that have clanged the way I work with my curls:

1. Deep conditioning hair masks. I recommend doing this on your hair at least 2x a month. A great one to start off with is simply any hydrating mask, my favorite is Authentic Beauty Concept or Moroccan Oil. Please be diligent, your hair will thank you!

2. Leave more water in your hair before adding in products. Your hair will curl perfectly fine on its own - as long as there is enough water. Half dry hair isn't doing you any justice my friend, dripping wet is better!

3. Scalp health & build up. Please cleanse your scalp and hair properly on wash days. Shampoo 2x. And use your fingernails to scrub well. The second one you can include your ends. Why do we do this? To remove any buildup in our hair/scalp that can negatively effect the outcome of your curls. Even though curly hair may not greasy quickly, we can still have issues that arise. So cleansing and hydrating properly is super important to overall scalp and hair health.
